Cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) mediates transfer of cholesterol esters to VLDL and LDL, which can then acquire apo E from HDL. Apo E is a ligand for hepatic lipoprotein receptors, which allows cholesterol to be delivered to the liver from where it can be secreted. This process is known as reverse cholesterol transport (Fig. 6.8).
